The Junior Gaelic Football team began their match against Maynooth strongly with a quick point from a free scored by Leah McGovern. A Maynooth attempt on goal was saved well by goalkeeper Meabh O’Sullivan. Unfortunately back to back attacks led to two goals for Maynooth. A goal from Alannah Prizeman and a point from Sarah McGovern kept the St Mary’s side in the game leading up to the first water break.
A point from Alannah Prizeman and great defending from Eadaoin O’Niell, Sophie Cullen and Katie Harney gave hope to the St Mary’s team. After a penalty scored by Maynooth the first half ended with the score line as; St Mary’s 1.3, Maynooth 3.3.
A strong third quarter from Maynooth left the score at 2.4 to 4.8. As the second water break ended a new side was shown from St Mary’s. Two quick goals from Sarah McGovern and a goal from Alannah Prizeman raised the home teams spirits. Maynooth kicked a few wides as the pressure was increased by the defenders and the forwards came through with an additional goal scored by Leah McGovern. A great catch from Saoirse O’Gormon allowed another goal to be scored putting St Marys ahead for the first time. However two goals and a point scored by Maynooth in response pulled them back. Deirdre Cronin’s goal finished the match with Maynooth winning 6.10 to 7.4.
The girls showed great team spirit throughout the match and were a credit to the school with their sportsmanship, determination and resolve.
