Junior Hockey

It was a busy week for our Junior hockey team. They had two matches at home on the cards.

First up was Mount Sackville on Tuesday 25th January. The girls played extremely well in their match against Mount Sackville. It was 0-0 at half time with both teams having played a very good first half. Unfortunately, the visiting side found the net and won with a score of 2-0 . Although we didn’t achieve the victory they definitely deserved, we still showed great sportsmanship. Aisling Brennan was player’s player of the match. Well done girls.Next up was Newpark Comprehensive on Wednesday 26th January. It was clear from the start of the match we had learned a lot from the previous game and the St. Mary’s girls preformed outstandingly well in their match against Newpark taking the win in the game with a score of 3-1. We started the match the stronger of the two teams. We put a lot of pressure on the visiting side and eventually after some great build up play and a tussle in the circle Juliette Crowley Smith found the back of the net to put us 1-0 ahead. The Nass girls kept the pressure on and soon a great cross from Sophie Weir found Katie Gammell unmarked in the circle. Katie slotted the ball past the keeper with ease. The visiting side came back strong after tip and converted a short corner to leave the score at half time 2-1. In the second half both teams had their chances but it was a cross from Keelin Hughes into Sophie Weir that sealed the victory for the St. Mary’s side. Players player of the match today was Sophie Weir.

Well done girls it was a great team performance over the two days. Thank you to our match reporters Hannah McElligott and Emma O’Donnnell and assistant coach Pia Costello.
